1004 Jennifer Burnham-Grubbs: Reinventing Health Insurance
Why U.S. Healthcare is the “Biggest Gaslighting Project in History
Health insurance now eats around 30 percent of the average American family’s after-tax income, about $35,000 a year for a family of four. For that you get a $5,000 to $10,000 deductible and the right to file a claim someone else may deny, in the country that spends more on healthcare than any other and whose life expectancy is going backwards.
Jennifer Burnham-Grubbs calls it the biggest gaslighting project in recent history. She would know. She has spent 21 years inside life and health insurance.
Jennifer ranks among the top 175 independent insurance producers in the United States, a group that is less than 3 percent women. She founded Quantum Insurance Services in 2013 with a cell phone and a laptop, after tripling her boss’s business in three years and being told that her maternity leave had been “really like a paid vacation, so you’re never going to get another raise.”
Quantum grew 37 percent in its first year while the Affordable Care Act cut health commissions from 20 percent to as little as nothing. In September 2024 she had what she calls a flash of insight, vetted it with the leading third-party insurance consultancy in the country, and founded Ionava, a healthcare fintech and an entirely new category: an alternative to health insurance built on 400 million life years of mortality and morbidity data. Today she shares exactly how it works, why the private sector will fix healthcare before Congress does, and what it took to get a woman-founded fintech funded.
Today we meet a self-described insurance nerd who zoomed out and asked what people actually want: protection from the big what-ifs, and help paying for everything else. Ionava answers with two things. A Vault, reserved at $300,000, $700,000 or $1 million, that pays cash on a terminal, critical or chronic diagnosis or the loss of two of six activities of daily living (the average cash cost of cancer treatment is $262,000; the smallest Vault is $300,000). And a Wallet, funded by 70 percent of a subscription that costs about half what health insurance does, which spends anywhere in the world on anything health and wellness, no network, no prior authorization, rolls over year to year, earns interest from 2 percent up, and goes with you when you graduate to Medicare. Do the healthy things, from sleep and hydration to an early cancer screening at 30, and your health score rises and so does your interest rate. A bank account that pays you for being healthy.
We talk about why cash rates now match or beat insured rates (Jennifer’s own cataract surgery: $10,000 cash with the best surgeon in Beverly Hills, cutting-edge lenses, no fight), why a doctor takes home about $65 for an office visit inside a network, the $7 trillion consumers already spend on health and wellness that insurance ignores, and why she wrote the algorithm on blockchain. We get into the fundraise: the 0.26 percent statistic she refuses to accept, the Wall Street friend who spent hours teaching her to write ten-word emails, the coach who told her to say “Princeton” in the first 30 seconds, her rule that a man is competent until proven otherwise and a woman is incompetent until proven otherwise, and her hot take on which investors will never hear a woman’s pitch no matter what she delivers. Plus, the citrine crystal she held on every scary call in 2013, and why people who give 110 percent should work for themselves.
🔑Key Takeaways🔑
💰 🏥 The Vault and the Wallet: How Ionava splits protection from spending. A Vault reserved at $300,000, $700,000 or $1 million that pays cash on a terminal, critical or chronic diagnosis, and a Wallet that takes 70 percent of your subscription, spends anywhere in health and wellness with no network and no prior authorization, rolls over, earns interest, and goes with you at 65.
📈 🌱 A Good Driver Discount for Your Body: Sleep, hydration, mental health, community and early screenings raise your health score, and your health score raises the interest rate on the money you haven’t spent. Skin in the game changes behavior; Ionava pays you for it.
💸 🔎 Cash Is Cheaper Than You Think: A doctor takes home about $65 for an office visit inside an insurance network. Jennifer’s own cataract surgery cost $10,000 cash with the best surgeon in Beverly Hills, versus $10,000 out of pocket on top of $15,000 in premiums, with the insurer choosing her lenses. Cash rates now match or beat insured rates, and most people don’t know it.
🚀 📱 A Cell Phone, a Laptop and a Citrine Crystal: Why Jennifer left the boutique whose business she’d tripled, squatted in an unused corner of the building, held a crystal for courage on scary calls, and grew Quantum 37 percent in year one while the Affordable Care Act cut commissions from 20 percent to as little as zero.
👩💼 ⚖️ Competent Until Proven Otherwise: The credibility gap in fundraising, why a coach told her to say “Princeton” in the first 30 seconds, the Wall Street friend who taught her to write ten-word emails, and her hot take on which investors will never hear a woman’s pitch no matter what she delivers.
