When you think of entrepreneurs in tech, what’s the picture forms in your mind? A young guy in a hoodie in his garage? A bunch of bros in dark rooms lit only by the blue light of computers, surrounded by a bunch of empty red bull cans and pizza boxes?
You’re probably not too far off, and today let’s change that picture for you, because today on Wings we meet an innovator in artificial intelligence who is changing the game for women of color in tech.
Dr. Nashlie H. Sephus grew up in Jackson, Mississippi, and against the odds, found her way into tech and artificial intelligence. With a Ph.D. from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, she went on to become the CTO for an innovative AI company called Partpic, which she sold several years back to Amazon. There she led the Amazon Visual Search team in Atlanta, and now serves as a Tech Evangelist for Amazon AI, focusing on ensuring fairness and erasing racial bias from artificial intelligence
Today we talk about how those biases manifest, the impact on our society and what can be done about it.
We also focus on why it’s vital for women and women of color to give back and #LiftAsWeClimb. Nashlie is an inspiration in that area, as the founder and CEO of The Bean Path non-profit organization based in her hometown of Jackson, Mississippi where she assists individuals and startups with technical expertise and guidance. Last year she also became the owner and developer of the Jackson Tech District—14-acres of mixed-use commercial real-estate in downtown Jackson—to bring tech training and workforce/economic development to the area.
